Ajay Devgan gets candid with Tarana
Intro: The usually reticent actor opens up about his latest film, Halla Bol, and his first step towards direction
Ajay Devgan is soon to make his directorial debut with the romantic comedy U, Me Aur Hum. The movie is being produced by Kajol and the couple will also star. After playing all kinds of characters, the talented Devgan has two National Awards behind him, and continues to prove himself with each successive release. Halla Bol is currently in theatres, but we got him to rewind to where it all began, with his first release Phool Aur Kante.
Excerpts from a conversation:
Tarana: Do you get psyched at people when they take you seriously?
Ajay Devgan: I don’t know why people take me so seriously, considering I don’t take myself seriously.
Tarana: People say you are an introvert and don’t like doing interviews.
Ajay Devgan: I am definitely not an introvert, but I am too lazy and often shy to give an interview.
Tarana: I was very confused about the name of your film Halla Bol. For me, when I say ‘Halla Bol’ what first comes to mind is fun, excitement, action.
Ajay Devgan: The title means to raise your voice. Besides, there is a lot of fun in the movie.
Tarana: It is said the movie was inspired by the Jessica Lal murder case.
Ajay Devgan: The Jessica Lal murder only comprises an episode in the entire film. The story mainly revolves around this character, Sameer Khan, who is an actor struggling to make it big in the industry. There comes a point when he has to make a decision to follow his conscience, with far-reaching consequences.
Tarana: We have heard you shot a part of Halla Bol on the sets of Omkara.
Ajay Devgan: We did. There were portions in the movie where we had to show an actor shooting. And, as I was playing a star myself, we shot there.
Tarana: There is a glimpse of Kareena in the film, and she wanted her name listed in the credits. Is that true?
Ajay Devgan: I haven’t really heard about it, but Kareena is in a particular scene.
Tarana: You have worked with Raj Kumar Santoshi before, on a film for which you won a National Award. Was it fun working with him again?
Ajay Devgan: Yes, it is fun when you are working with a good director who is passionate about his work, who is a writer himself and, above all, is a very good actor. Things become much easier when your director has an insight of what he is expecting from an actor.
Tarana: Does he enact the scene for you?
Ajay Devgan: While reading the script, he is simultaneously enacting it. He doesn’t realize this, and does it so well that you get scared about whether you will be able to enact the scene as well as he does.
Tarana: After playing a wide variety of characters, do you think you still need to learn, or have you learnt enough?
Ajay Devgan: I think you learn every day. The day you stop learning, you should stop working. It is fun when you keep learning from others’ mistakes, our mistakes. It is an ongoing process.
Tarana: Is there any particular role you think is challenging for you to perform?
Ajay Devgan: As you learn everyday, you do get challenging roles where you look at a scene and ask yourself if you will be able to enact it. It happens at every stage of life and I am sure all my colleagues will agree with me.
Tarana: You are considered one of the naughtiest actors in the industry, playing pranks on co-stars. From where do you get these ideas?
Ajay Devgan: One has to enjoy one’s work while working. You have to wake up in the morning and say you want to work. We have to add the fun element to our work, which makes it enjoyable.
